As We Know It - Classic Greys Anatomy Part II

Season 2 Episode 17 - Meredith is the Girl with the Bomb

This episode and the preceding one was up there as one of the best Grey's episodes. Edge of the seat drama throughout the entire sequence of events.

Meredith narrating: "In hospitals they say you know. You know when you're going to die. Some doctors say it's a look patients get in their eyes. Some say there's a scent, a smell of death. Some think there's just some kind of sixth sense. When the great beyond is heading for you, you feel it coming. Whatever it is, it's creepy. Because if you know, what do you do about it? Forget about the fact that you're scared out of your mind. If you knew this was your last day on earth, how would you want to spend it?"

The episode opens with a recap of last weeks episode. We see Meredith standing over the patient with her hand in his chest. Dylan and the bomb squad are strapping a special vest over her torso and she feeling slightly freaked out and says to Christina: "I told you," referring to their conversation of that morning when Christina kicked her out of bed. She turns her attention to Dylan and says; "You have a plan, right?"  "You're gonna get me out of this." He doesn't answer her.

Burke orders Christina to leave the room

Burke takes over ventillating the patient and orders Christina out of the room. He tells her he cannot do what he has to do with her there. She leaves and heads back to Derek's OR. Derek asks Christina how the girl with the bomb is and Christina blurts out that Meredith is the girl with the bomb. At that split second Bailey's husband Tucker goes into cardiac arrest. Derek works like crazy to get his heart started again and continues on with the surgery, Christina looks outside and see the bomb squad and Meredith moving the gurney. Christina runs out to see what's going on, and Dylan yells at her to get hell the away. Meredith explains that they are moving to an OR further away from the oxygen lines in case they blow up. She then asks Christina to distract her, as she is really freaked and dying to pee.

Meanwhile Bailey is in hard labour and refusing to push, Addison takes care of her and at the same time warns the Chief that he may have to find her an OR soon or Bailey's and the baby's life could be in serious danger. This was a different side of Bailey that we have not seen before. We're so used to seeing Bailey as a very strong and capable person. We see Bailey as vulnerable and not at all in control, which is exactly how it is during childbirth. George eventually convinces Bailey to give birth.

George helps Bailey.

Alex and Izzie; frustrated because it seems like there is nothing they can do to help the situation, sneak off and have sex in the linen closet. They are need however, when the Chief under a huge amount of stress and pressure has an severe anxiety attack. Adele; the Chief's wife orders her husband back to bed and tells Izzie and Alex that they can talk to her about the Chief medical situation.

When Dylan tells Meredith it's time to remove her hand, she starts to freak a little. Dylan tells her to imagine that he is someone she likes if it will help her to do what she needs to do. Meredith pictures Derek in her mind standing there saying "You can do this, it will be over in a second." She slowly wraps her hand around the nose-cone of the bomb and holding it level (as per Dylan's instructions) she removes her hand and the bomb and gently places it in Dylan's hands.

Episode 2.17 As We Know It

Meredith momentarily hesitates as she is about to remove the bomb.

The song "Breathe" by Anna Nalik plays in the background. Meredith watches Dylan slowly turn and walk out of the OR, Meredith slowly walks to the door to thank him and just as we are all catching our breath, the bomb explodes; killing Dylan and another member of the bomb squad. Meredith is propelled backwards and knocked unconscious. That scene right there made me nearly jump out of my skin; I was not expecting it.

While the rest of the hospital wait for the doctors to return from the OR floor. Christina and Izzie (fully clothed) take Meredith into the shower and clean the blood from her face and hair. George is standing inside the door watching, it's a far, far away from the dream George had that morning. Meanwhile Derek is pacing the floor looking for Meredith, yelling at everyone "Where is she?" We all know he's looking for Meredith. However the others think it is Addison he's looking for. When Addison runs over and hugs Derek; Adele Webber notices the look on Derek's face and she whispers to the Chief that Addison was not the she Derek was asking for.

Later that evening Derek pays Meredith a visit; he tells her he's glad that she didn't die. The love between them is still very much alive. Meredith asks him about their last kiss, she is upset that she cannot remember it. Derek reminds her, by explaining the entire moment, right down to remembering the smell of her hair. It was a touching scene. Meredith tells him the scent was lavender.

The episode closes with Meredith narrating: "If you knew this was your last day on earth, how would you want to spend it?"
