Grey's Anatomy Season 9 DVD Review

I would be getting a copy of this Grey's Anatomy DVD before it sells out as this is one all Grey's fans' should have in their collection.

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 is due for release on the 27th August 2013. An example of the cover art is below. It is available now at Amazon

The release of this DVD was originally scheduled for September sometime, however it has been brought forward to the 27 August 2013, and Amazon are taking orders for it now. The great news is it is only $38.96, which is a lot cheaper than I could ever buy it for in Australia. So guess where I will be buying my Grey's Anatomy products from now on.

Many fans had high expectations of this season, given the tragic plane crash in Season 8 and the death of two much loved characters. When Grey's returns for Season 9 it is a new start for many of the doctors who struggle in their own ways to deal with the crash, the horrifying night mares and the death of their loved ones. Meredith will deal with losing her sister and Derek is dealing with the potential loss of his surgical career given the injury to his hand, not only this, but must face losing Mark Sloan, his best friend.

Shonda dubbed Season 9 as the "season of romance" and this did turn out to be true. For the most part, this season is well worth watching, especially if you are a couple shipper as there is plenty going on with the couples on Grey's Anatomy. Meredith will get her groove back, Cristina flees to Minnesota, only to realise that she needs her person, Owen and Meredith so she returns. Bailey and Ben plan their upcoming wedding and the Chief (Richard, who is the real chief, in my opinion) continues to mentor everyone and suffers tragedies of his own, while supporting everyone else. Alex looks like getting romance finally, but will it survive.  Bailey encounters a few shocks of her own and almost gives up on being a doctor. Anyway people, before I give it all away to the fans who missed this season, you must get this one for your collection.

As a huge critic of the show, this season was very good. It was not as good as the early days of Grey's, but it was up there with some of my all time favourite episodes. Season 7 was the epic fail in my opinion and I still have not bought the DVD.

Grey's heads into its tenth season on the 26 September, and it is really important that you watch this DVD if you have missed Season 9, so you won't feel totally lost. If you are a Meredith and Derek shipper, then Season 9 is one that you will not want to miss as there are many great moments for them.

This DVD also contains lots of special features, including scenes that were deleted, which I love watching and some bloopers which are great. There is usually an interview or two with cast members.

Order your copy now, so that you are all caught up before Season 10 premieres.

Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on ABC at 9pm in a two-hour episode on the 26th September 2013, ABC plan to show new episodes all the way up to the Christmas break and then Grey's will return on the 27th February 2014 for the second half of Season 10. Which means not many annoying repeats hopefully. I cannot wait!

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Premiere - Going, Going, Gone - Review

RIP Mark "McSteamy" Sloan

The lead up to the Season Premiere last week was fraught with a lot of talk about who would make it out of the crash and who would not. However, when Grey's Anatomy went to air in Australia last night, we began with a time-jump three months into the future.

Mere-Der Love

Viewers all over Twitter and forums last week and last night were confused to say the least given the huge cliff-hanger left by the plane crash in the Season 8 Finale and many fans would have expected the show to pick up where we left off, where our favourite doctors were still stuck out there in the woods. Given that after the finale last season, Shonda made a big deal of the fact that they are still out there, you would think she would start off the season with what happened out in the forest. Now Shonda gave an interview in July explaining the time-jump of three months and that episode 2 would go back to what happened out there. However if you are a fan who does not read spoilers, articles and interviews about your favourite show then watching the premiere would have left you feeling confused. At least when I sit down with my daughter in 10 days time to watch the first two episodes, I can explain to her what's going on.

Still On the Hunt

Owen Hunt looking very lost

Anyway, apart from the first few moments of confusion, overall the premiere was pretty good. The tribute to Mark in his dying moments when they took him off life support was lovely. Mark had a living will requesting that if after 30 days there was no hope of recovery then all life sustaining procedures had to be ceased. The video that was supposed to be Derek's wedding to Addison was a little laughable given Patrick and Eric's ages, however Shonda did her best. It was funny given that I remember Eric Dane in Charmed and he did not look like that and that was less than 10 years ago, not 18 years ago as the 1994 date suggested. However it was one of the nicer tributes for a character that I've seen on a drama series in a long time. That being said, many fans are criticising George's send off, and I cannot understand why. And I also heard something ridiculous about Shonda Rhimes getting death threats on Twitter after McSteamy died on Grey's Anatomy. It's very hard to understand how a person could rationally do that; I mean it's a TV show.

Getting a Lesson

McSteamy and Avery; the Plastic's Posse

Mark Sloan will be missed terribly on this show. His smile, his humour and not forgetting that the man was hot! Many long time Grey's fans will miss seeing Mark's steamy love scenes. And it does not matter how hard Shonda tries with her other sexy cast members; McSteamy was one of a kind.

While most of the episode was centered around Mark's death. We were also introduced to new interns who Meredith Grey has managed to terrify, so much so that she has been dubbed Medusa (which I loved). Some fans saw the nickname as an insult, but I don't. It would also seem that Meredith and Cristina are having issues with flying; neither have been able to get on a plane. It's hard to imagine how this would feel. Cristina is at Mayo clinic and it would appear that she is unhappy there, so let's hope that means she comes back to Seattle. If not for Meredith and Alex, but for her marriage. Pictures and sneak peeks would have us believe otherwise. Photos from episode three show Cristina still at the Mayo clinic. I think that it's only a matter of time before she returns.

Shades of Meredith Grey

Medusa aka Meredith Grey kick ass Attending

Patrick Dempsey and Sara Ramirez totally knocked their acting for six. I thought every one of their scenes were terrific. And towards the end when Mark died; Patrick and Sara really brought it; it was not overdone, and totally believable. It's looking like these two will be friends this season although it probably is a little too early to make that kind of prediction. I do think that Derek won't be operating for a while, if ever. He may end up teaching which has been alluded to in the spoilers and would give Patrick Dempsey the time off to race or work on movies. I think we will see him in most episodes, however we just may not have as much Derek on our screens as before. This may not make the MerDer shippers happy; but quality is better than quantity and if Patrick and Ellen get some decent stories this season, then fans should be satisfied.

Calliope Torres Photo

Callie Torres has a hard road ahead

Alex and Jackson look like they are staying. When the show opened it looked like Alex was set to go to John's Hopkin's as planned last season, however after he met the new peds attending, it was clear Alex had a change of heart. At the end of the day at the airport; Alex decided to stay and found Meredith in the bar talking to Cristina on her Ipad. He apologised, and all was well. Alex asked Cristina to tell Owen he is staying at Seattle, Cristina is very confused until Alex explains that he saw Owen at the airport. Next we see Owen and April leading a pig out of a barn. Geez Shonda I didn't even miss her until that scene; not once did I wonder where she was, yet I missed Teddy and Lexie. I kept hoping to see Lexie pop up in one of the Mark flashbacks, but I guess they could not use any footage or photos of Lexie for legal reasons.

And lastly can I just mention "Booty Call Bailey" I did not like this. It's almost as if Shonda has stripped Bailey of her hard-core surgeon persona to this new person who the interns make fun of. I hope Bailey brings back the Nazi very soon. Don't get me wrong here; Bailey can have a fiance' and a love life; but Bailey running around in and out of on-call rooms just goes against the reputation she built for seven seasons.

All in all it was a great episode, probably not as good as last year's premiere; but good. I still wonder whether showing what happened out in the woods in the first episode would have been better. I guess I can't know that until I watch on Friday afternoon or on Tues night here in Australia.

What did you think of the premiere of the ninth season of Grey's Anatomy? Is it time the show was put to bed or is it just getting better? Sound off in the comments or have your say on Facebook or Twitter.

Too Many Grey's Anatomy Spoilers Or Not Enough?

Is Shonda Rhimes talking about the upcoming season of Grey's Anatomy more than usual? I think she is. In the lead up to the Season 8 finale; in my opinion Shonda was very vocal than she has been in the past. When you compare it to the lead up to the Season 7 finale; Shonda and her team were pretty quiet. And to make it worse, word leaked about the contract negotiations of the original stars, which more or less spoiled a lot of the suspense for many fans, including myself. The contract negotiations of the original stars dictated the story arcs; this should never have happened, however that's different story altogether.

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Cast photo

I didn't start reading spoilers and watching previews until a friend directed me on how to to watch Season 7 online (or download it), instead of having to wait more than six months to see it in Australia. During the six seasons that I waited patiently until February for my favourite show to premiere in Australia, I do not remember much being said about what was coming next on Grey's Anatomy. In-fact I remember reading something to the effect that Shonda Rhimes had all her staff, cast and crew sign agreements which effectively banned anyone from her camp talking about the show. In-fact at the time, I was working with someone who did have access to the show from the US and she was careful never to give away spoilers.

Ever since the lead up to the Season finale in May 2012, there have been more leaks to the press about what's to come on Grey's than ever before.
However, having said that; this is only my opinion as I did not pay attention to the gossip sites and Facebook, Twitter and the like. Shortly after I learnt how to get access to my favourite show via the magic of the internet, I began to read some spoilers.

Talk about Grey's Anatomy is a good thing in the sense that it generates interest amongst the current fans, the new fans and the viewers who lost interest in the show. Ratings will tell us that this has happened steadily over the last four to five years. The pilot episode drew over 16 million viewers, and given that it aired in the 10pm timeslot, these numbers were record breaking. By the ninth episode; Grey's had attracted over 22 million viewers. Season's 2 and 3 were in terms of ratings the most successful, and after Season 4; ratings started to decline.  The ratings table at Wikipedia tell the story. Despite this lull in the ratings; Grey's Anatomy is still up there as one of the most popular shows in the US; winning it's timeslot time and time again.

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 DVD Cover

Are the declining a result of too many spoilers and Shonda Rhimes running her mouth? Probably not. Many fans quit this show because they were fed up with certain story arcs that seemingly did not work. The dead Denny sex with Izzie Stevens in Season 5 was one story that was very unpopular amongst fans. And how can we forget the George/Izzie pairing. This idea went down like a lead balloon. Why Shonda and her writers did not stick with the Alex/Izzie pairing is a big mystery, as Alex and Izzie were very popular with the fans of both Justin Chambers and Katherine Heigl.

Izzie and Alex; Popular Grey's couple

What would help ratings and bring back the long, lost fans who gave up on the show a few years ago would be to go back to the basic formula the writers used in Season's 1,2 & 3. If you visit any of the Grey's Anatomy message boards; such as, TWOP or Grey'sABC, that seems to be the general opinion amongst contributors to these forums.

George and Izzie, Best friends who should have never been lovers

The pairing of George and Izzie and the end of George's marriage to Callie was a story that should have never happened. But the past is the past and George and Izzie are now not part of Grey's Anatomy. That being said, these two actors were very popular and many fans miss them. This does not mean that Shonda and her writers cannot interest some of the fans who lost interest a few years ago. Great drama can be created on TV without jumping the shark, as the Grey's writers have done on so many occasions. Many fans were upset about the plane crash finale in the eighth season; especially when it culminated in the death of a favourite character; Lexie. News has recently come to light that Eric Dane; who plays Mark Sloan; the love of Lexie's life is leaving too. And it pretty clear from the chatter from Shonda, her actors and crew members leaking spoilers and pics that Mark will succumb to his injuries from the plane crash. This scenario is very likely going to upset many Mark and Lexie fans. If the writers don't try to capture the basic formula this show was built on and re-ignite past fan interest, I really don't see Grey's continuing past Season 9 or 10.

Happier times for Mark and Lexie

Personally for mine; I would prefer less chatter about what's to come as a lot of it is speculation and not based in fact. The so-called video links that have been released are not what I would consider Season 9 previews, only scenes from previous seasons. I rarely watch previews as I don't really want to know what's coming until I see the episodes. However, that's a difficult task given when I write for my blog here, I need to research the latest Grey's Anatomy news.

So readers; what do you think? Would you like more spoilers and what do you think of the recent spoilers about Grey's Anatomy?  Sound off in the comments, like us on Facebook or connect via Twitter.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 Rant and Rave – Part II

A few weeks ago I posted part I of my postmortem on Season 8 of Grey’s Anatomy. Now that the Season Finale has aired in most countries; I will continue my ranting. Read part II here:
Grey's Anatomy Season 8, Rant and Rave Part I

The second part of Season 8 began with the If/Then episode. Shonda Rhimes created an alternate universe with Meredith as the central character. This was a success; as far as doing something different, which is what was done with the musical episode last season. I personally loved the music episode, however many fans complained. At end of the episode it was clear to me that the real story on Grey’s Anatomy is the way if should be, not the story in Meredith’s dream for the If/Then episode. And we now know that Lexie coding in the ER and Mark carrying her into the ER was definitely foreshadowing her fate.

A Shiny Happy Meredith

In actual fact, if you think back to the first episode of Season 8 when Lexie is walking down the stairs in the opening scenes, giving the same speech to the new interns, that Richard Webber gave in the very first episode. Obviously we had no idea what was to come, however it is pretty clear that most viewers were expecting it to be Lexie when it came out that someone would die in the Season Finale.

Mark finds Lexie, critically injured and near death

After the If/Then episode, we had a Valentine’s Day episode which was mostly romantic, upbeat, emotional, funny and sad as we could see that Cristina and Owen marriage was falling apart. In the next episode we see them in therapy trying desperately to fix things. Derek and his sister Amelia are arguing over a patient and Meredith is kicking ass fixing a guys fingers that got trapped in a meat grinder. These episodes were pretty great in my opinion. My only criticism was that the writers forgot that Cristina had made it clear to Owen late in Season 6 that she did not want children.

CrisOwen 's Marriage is in Trouble

The next three episodes were disappointing. Cristina was running around convinced her husband was cheating, and as a viewer I could not believe this would happen. However the focus on Alex and his pregnant intern was a great story arc, however I did not want to see them pair up. The story about the tiny, premature baby was depressing but the focus on Alex was great for a change. When Owen admitted he had cheated in the next episode; One Step Too Far. This is where I felt Shonda and her writer had gone a step too far, because I could not see Cristina and Owen coming back from this and I also felt that it was not in Owen’s character to cheat. Seeing Meredith back in Neuro was great and also showed that she is better off in General surgery, as she would always be in Derek’s shadow as a Neuro-fellow.

Cristina believes this Nurse is sleeping with Owen

These few episodes were where I felt the writing fell apart a little, however not as tragically as it did in Season 7 with the Mark, Callie and Arizona triangle. I don’t know one person who liked that story arc. In Support System I thoroughly enjoyed the exchange between Cristina and Owen where they lock themselves in their house and call in sick with the intention of trying to repair the damage to their marriage. Mark taking over as Chief of Surgery in Owen’s absence was a hoot; and he actually did a great job albeit annoying to some. It will be so sad to see him go. His scene with Dr Webber was a classic and it was obvious when Chief Sloan entered that OR that Webber would win that one.

Cristina suspects; but doesn't know yet

By episode 20; The Girl with No Name the quality of the writing improved and when the residents were flying all over the country for interviews at various hospitals, which is what happens in fifth year residency, rumours started circulating that death was coming to Seattle Grace. The two episodes dealing with the board exams that residents take to become board certified surgeons were really excellent. I loved Alex’s dedication to little Tommy and his inability to switch off and let Arizona handle things. Alex was determined to save that tiny baby, but to no avail. And the end result was that we the viewer assumed that he would fail his boards. However it’s April who fails, which is a surprise; but her meltdown during the exam must have freaked out the proctors.

Moment of Truth

By the time the penultimate episode went to air, the buzz was well and truly alive amongst critics, fans and entertainment writers about the big death that was to come. Fans were terrified it might be Derek who dies as Patrick Dempsey had talked about leaving a few times in the last twelve months. Meredith had been offered a spot at the Brigham, which is the best General surgery program in the US, and Derek had decided they were moving to Boston. Just days before the finale went to air, it was revealed that all original actors on the show had inked new deals, so this ruined the suspense of what was to come in the Season 8 finale.

About to Board the Plane to Idaho

However, regardless of that; it was entertaining and thrilling, heartbreaking and sad. Even though many fans, including myself were pretty sure Lexie would be the one who died, it didn’t ruin the emotion the actors portrayed throughout every scene. Even the scene between Owen and Teddy made me cry and I’ve never really been a fan of Teddy, which surprised me.

All in all this season was great compared to Season 7 which fell apart with the dreaded love triangle we won’t mention again. However, there is still room for improvement. With three cast members leaving, two of them are already gone, and one is going soon, it is mine and many fans hope that remaining characters can get a decent story and not have it cut short. For a while now there have been too many regular cast members and not enough time is dedicated to certain storylines. Many fans would love to see more of the basics of Grey’s Anatomy, like it was in Season 1,2 and 3, and definitely more of the funny. Grey’s is fabulous because of the comedy, the quirk, dark humour, the music and the emotional storylines. The tragic, dramatic, shocking stories work to a point; however I think Grey’s has seen enough tragedy.

So that’s my take on Season 8 of Grey’s Anatomy. Tell me what you think by sounding off in the comments box or you can connect via Grey’s Anatomy Addicts on Facebook or Twitter.
