Cristina and Owen on Grey's Anatomy - The Final Two Seasons

Cristina and Owen have many devoted fans, none of which were looking forward to seeing them say goodbye to each other in the Season 10 Finale. Their story; particularly the last two years has seen Cristina and Owen have many ups and downs. Did the creator of Grey's Anatomy; Shonda Rhimes succeed in closing their story in a way the fans would have been happy with?

Given that Sandra Oh has called time on her role as Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy it is not likely that we will see Cristina and Owen resolve their issues and get a happy ending. Let's go over the background of their marriage during the last two seasons.
During Season 8 Cristina and Owen struggled with the reality of Cristina not wanting children. Having become accidentally pregnant in the Season 7 Finale; Cristina decided a termination was her only option. Her first mistake was to make the decision without really discussing it with Owen. When Meredith begged Owen not to punish his wife for not wanting a baby; he sought her out to talk, which ended with Owen agreeing to accompany Cristina to the clinic to have the termination. He then spent the next four months stewing about the baby that would never be. He did not talk about these feelings to Cristina.
Not long after Teddy's husband, Henry died (Teddy was Cristina's mentor and Cristina was the surgeon on Henry's case) Cristina elected to help Teddy steal a surgery from a fellow surgeon; as Teddy felt this surgeon was not qualified enough to perform the surgery. Owen has already ordered them to both go home and get some sleep, as they had been on duty for too long. He finds out that they went behind his back and is furious and this is what leads to Owen yelling at Cristina in Meredith’s kitchen, that Cristina had killed their baby. The entire hospital now knew their business, as Meredith had everyone over to celebrate Zola’s first birthday.
The surprising part about this exchange was that Cristina thought that she and Owen should put the abortion in the past and forget about it. Owen screaming at her was over the line. And Cristina can't really expect Owen to forget it, she should at least acknowledge his pain. Not long after this they went to couples counseling and things did not go well; this was the day that Owen got drunk and cheated; and later told Cristina who now believes that Owen cheated to even the score. In the closing episodes of Season 8, Cristina had decided she was leaving as she had been offered many fellowships at some of the best hospitals. She felt that the marriage was done.
In an interview just before Season 9 premiered in the US with Access Hollywood, Kevin McKidd said that he is expecting Christina and Owen to reunite in Season 9. However; he also says that he has no idea what’s in store for the couple. McKidd was quoted as saying that:“I think they’re gonna be OK. Nobody’s telling me, but I do think they’re the most complicated, in a way, of the couples, and the most tortured of the couples a lot of the time. On paper, they should not work as a couple, and that’s what I love about how they have written Christina and Owen — that they really get inside the heads of these two characters and sort of go, ‘Why are these people even together?’ And when they are, there’s a chemistry there that seems to work. And they struggle on and I do think they’re going to be happy and good for each other.” Sounds optimistic, but will their story be believable? And most die hard Grey's fans are worried about this. It would seem as though one of them needs to give up what they want in order to have a happy marriage.
It does seem like their problems are deal-breakers. If your partner wants kids and you don't, then getting married is really not a good idea. The problem with Cristina and Owen is way past the whole 'who did what to whom' scenario. They really need to figure out if there is a compromise to be made. It hardly seems like anything will be resolved with Cristina in Minnesota doing her fellowship, and Owen staying in Seattle. Cristina chose to leave despite the plane crash and Meredith begging her to stay. When Cristina left Owen also begged her to stay, however he needs to decide if he can live a life without kids, and Cristina needs to really think carefully about whether she may want a baby some day. Personally from what I've seen of her character, it's unlikely she will want to stop her career and have kids and if you listen to the many fans, not many of them want to see Cristina bend for Owen and give him children.
My interpretation of events at the end of Season 8 and what we saw in Season 9, is that Cristina and Owen will realize that they need to be each other persons' first and foremost and this happened in Season 9, and it was wonderful to see. During those counselling sessions in Season 8, Owen said to Cristina that she should be his person, and Cristina said the same thing. That was the clue that Shonda gave us about how they will reunite. She also said it could take all season on her Twitter page. So fans took this as more rough times for the Cristina and Owen fans. Another clue was when Cristina told Meredith that Owen was her person, and Derek told Meredith that she needs make decisions with him and not Cristina.
As for the cheating, well Cristina knew nothing about that until a while after the counseling session; in fact it happened that same day. Owen’s bad judgement in sleeping with another woman was hard to comprehend given their circumstances. The marriage is falling to pieces and he goes and does that! However this does happen in many marriages where couples are miles apart yet still live together and sleep together. They are not intimate, this is obvious, they are barely communicating, and are both miserable and lost. However; whether Owens’ actions can be forgiven is a different story. It would seem as though Cristina wants to forgive him; however when she realizes that he may have done it to even the score, she does seem to change her attitude. It was the cheating that really threw the Cristina and Owen shippers for a loop and it seemed like drama for the sake of drama. Cheating seemed to be out of character for Owen. And didn't they have enough drama already.
Their problems were made worse and it’s a mystery why Shonda sent Owen’s character down this path. Some fans who once liked Owen, do not like him anymore; and now to work at redeeming Owen in the eyes of the fans, seems like just more work than the writers ever should have had to take on. Many women hate cheaters, and have had their partners cheat on them, so most women in this boat would not forgive this type of behavior from their man. Until the cheating happened Cristina had no reason to distrust Owen. Now the trust in the marriage is gone too. Shonda may well have a message she is trying to send viewers via the cheating story, but I'm damned if I know what that is. Season 10 is over and Cristina is gone; and I still don't understand the point of having Owen cheat.
In Season 9 Shonda did manage to redeem Owen, at least in my opinion. He would not and could not stop blaming himself for putting his wife and the others on that plane and we see him deal with this and at the root of it all he was probably feeling awful about losing the love of his life. Cristina and Owen end up getting a divorce as Owen feels as though Cristina is done with the marriage, however he also realizes that if he and Cristina are divorced, then there will be no conflict of interest concerning the law suit.
On the day they are to sign the papers, she tells Owen that she wanted to try again, they go ahead and make the divorce official to remove their conflict of interest and Owen also believes that signing the papers means that they will not hurt each other anymore. They then seal this promise with a kiss and some hot sex. What I loved about this was Cristina's realization that Owen is indeed her person and so is Meredith, but in a different way. This was the break through I was hoping to see from Cristina. The friendship she has with Meredith is special, however it cannot take the place of her husband or marriage or in any way dictate what goes on in her marriage. I saw Meredith and Cristina really come to terms with this in Season 9 and it's about time.

The only way for Cristina and Owen to make it, is for one of them to give in regarding children. Owen would need to sacrifice being a father or Cristina would need to give in and have a child. I don't see it happening as you cannot fight what you truly believe and want. At the close of Season 9, Owen finds himself taking care of a ten year old boy whose family are both badly injured and unconscious. Cristina sees how much Owen cares for this child and realizes that he needs to be a father. She decides to end things in the Season 9 Finale.  Season 10 returned, and within the second episode, Owen and Cristina are in bed together. They elect to both start dating, which helps them both keep away from each other and work on what they individually want out of life. Owen meets Emma, a surgeon from another Seattle hospital and she seems to be just what Owen needs.
A few months into their relationship they are talking moving in together. Cristina turns up at Owens trailer to congratulate him on moving in with Emma, and give him a bottle of wine she stole from Derek. Of course they end up in bed and they are very aware of what happened, so there is no reading into things, at least on Cristina's part. Emma shows up a the hospital to talk to Owen about what kind of house they are looking for and to have the conversation about kids, when Owen hears that she intends to quit work to devote herself to her kids, something changes and he decides that Emma is not the person for him. The weeks and months roll on and Cristina and Owen are able to behave as friends without jumping into bed every time. When Cristina is nominated for a Harper Avery, things change again. Due to politics, Cristina loses the award and it is during the days when her loss has sunk in that she realizes that things have to change.
The night after the ceremony, she returns to Seattle and gets back to work. Meredith talks her into going to Switzerland to give a talk about her research. What she doesn't know is the trip to Zurich to give her lecture will dictate what she does next with her career. To her surprise and shock, Dr Preston Burke appears and asks questions regarding her work, he then invites her to see what he is working on. When Cristina finally confesses to Burke what it is she wants to do, he tells her to come and work in Zurich. He is leaving and could not think of a better person to run the hospital he is at. The people who own the hospital have tonnes of money that they put towards research for complicated medical experiments, surgeries and treatments. It's the chance of a lifetime. Meredith meet Cristina at the airport and as soon as she look into Cristina's eyes, she knows and says "You're leaving."

So for Owen and Cristina the dream of being together is over for them and over for their fans, unless Cristina comes back one day or Shonda gives Sandra Oh her own show in Zurich. In the Season 10 Finale, Cristina has been putting off leaving for weeks, feeling as though she is not finished. She gets drunk with Meredith the night before, and wakes up late, in the morning with Owen. Perfect ways for her to say goodbye to the love of her life, and her soul-mate and person, Meredith.
She arrives at the hospital later on and schedules a heart transplant surgery for one of her patients who has been waiting on a heart. It is the same family she was treating with the three kids who all had bad hearts. The new attending starts trying to boss Cristina around, telling her she cannot do the surgery, but Cristina is having none of it. In the end Meredith talks her into letting the new attending do the surgery and get to the airport before she misses the plane and puts it off for another day. She agrees and Meredith gets her into a taxi. I won't say anymore, so as not to totally spoil it for anyone who has not seen it, but when the taxi pulls away, it is not the last time we see Cristina.
As for her and Owen, their goodbye is simple, bittersweet and sad. I guess if there was a happy ending to their story, it is that they are great friends, who love and care for each other dearly. Hopefully for Owen, with Cristina gone, he can find the woman he needs in his life. When the news broke last year that Sandra Oh was bowing out and shortly after Kevin McKidd confirmed he would like to stay, fans knew that Cristina and Owen were not destined to re-unite. As far as endings go, I felt that Shonda Rhimes did a beautiful job of wrapping up Cristina and Owen's relationship and Cristina's many years working at what began as Seattle Grace and is now Grey Sloan Memorial.
Were you in tears when Cristina left? Were you hoping that she would suddenly change her mind or Owen would quit as Chief and go with her? I would love to know what you were thinking during Cristina's final episode. Hit the comments with your thoughts or follow me on Facebook or Twitter.

The Hollywood Reporter - Cristina Will Help Owen Find His Person?

Well Grey's fans, interesting times indeed coming up on Grey's Anatomy next season. I just cannot wait. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Kevin McKidd yesterday and below is what he said about Season 10.

Kevin McKidd used to always believe that Cristina and Owen were MFEO on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, but following the couple's emotional split in the season-nine finale, that may no longer be the case.

"Should we hold out for Owen and Cristina being a couple? I don't know anymore," the actor behind Dr. Owen Hunt tells The Hollywood Reporter of the couple's long-term prospects.

In the ninth-season finale, Cristina broke things off with Owen for what seems like the final time in the duo's tumultuous relationship when she realized that she was the only person standing in the way of Owen following his dream of becoming a father.

"Cristina has given him this huge gift and she, in a way, helps him at the beginning of the season -- pushing him toward it in a very loving way," McKidd says, noting he'll still have just as many scenes with co-star Sandra Oh (Cristina) as he did when the pair were an on-screen item. "She's going to be helping him navigate new waters, trying to find a person who's going to be the person who has a kid with him. She's definitely encouraging him. He's definitely going to explore how he's going to construct a world and a life to become a father, and Cristina is trying to encourage him.

McKidd notes that the couple's most recent split -- which came after Cristina and Owen divorced so the former could reap the financial windfall from the plane crash settlement -- represents their most adult breakup and one that even Owen didn't protest.

"Owen tried to convince himself because he loves her so much that he doesn't want to be a father. He tried to convince himself of the fact that he can do without being a dad as long as he has Cristina," he says. "Then the complication comes when Ethan shows up, and Cristina, because she's a sharp cookie, can see what's going on -- that he's in denial because he loves her. The sad fact is this breakup is the first time they've broken up in an adult way and for an adult reason, ever. She's seen what he needs and is ready to give it to him, and sadly that means breaking apart."
The season 10 premiere picks up immediately where last season ended, with the hospital in the thick of a crisis from the super storm that soaked Seattle, causing everyone working in close quarters to manage the crush of patients.

So people what do you all think of this, can they work it out, will Owen try to work it out and get Cristina back? Are you hoping to see them back together or do you think it's over for Owen and Cristina. I would love to hear your opinion. Hit the comments or connect via Twitter or Facebook.

Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday the 26th September 2013 in a double episode. I don't know about all of you, but I cannot wait. I also seems as though we will be shown 12 new episodes before the Christmas Hiatus, and Grey's will return for the second half of the season on February 27, 2014. That will be awesome not to have too many repeat episodes. I know that most fans get sick of those.

Actor Isaiah Washington Still Watches Grey's Anatomy

Sandra Oh's former Grey's Anatomy co-star Isaiah Washington - who played Cristina's teacher and
almost husband Dr. Preston Burke  - appeared on CNN Newsroom today where he discussed his
new book and the big controversy that he was involved in on Grey's Anatomy a few years ago
which lead to his dismissal.

In the interview he says that he has been invited back to the show since he left and he briefly
mentions that still "peeks in" to watch Grey's Anatomy because he adores Sandra Oh.
You can watch the interview here

Sandra Oh has never commented on the controversy publicly other than leaving a cryptic remark in Marie Claire
but when asked in an interview if she was sad to see Isaiah Washington go, she said this:

Sandra Oh: How do I say this? For me, it’s been very difficult because I found our storyline very rich.
I found it a complicated relationship and I'm sad to see that relationship storyline to have gone. It’s sad.

Would you have liked to see Preston Burke back on Grey's Anatomy to stir things up?

Despite all the drama that happened during Season 3 with Isaiah Washington, T R Knight and Katherine Heigl, I would love to see Burke come back to Grey's Anatomy as I loved the character of Preston Burke. As for Burke and Cristina, I think Owen and Cristina make a better couple, simply because Burke expected things from Cristina that she just could not give him and I'm not sure Burke would have agreed to Marriage counselling; see photo below:

Owen and Cristina in Therapy

I am also not surprised that Washington still watches the show to see his former co-star; as Sandra Oh is such an amazing and talented actress. She never ceases to entertain.

Grey’s Anatomy Star Sandra Oh Talks About ‘Cristina and Owen’

Recently the Hollywood Reporter spoke to Sandra Oh about Grey’s Anatomy, her character’s storyline, and saying goodbye to cast-mates.

Read the interview below:

The Hollywood Reporter: This season has been particularly grueling for Cristina: an abortion, a broken marriage and infidelity, all topped off by a plane crash. Which scene did you grapple with the most?

Sandra Oh: It has been an extremely challenging year that has had a lot of ups and downs, both challenging and exhilarating. A lot of the scenes that Kevin McKidd and I did of Owen and Cristina arguing in their apartment was like its own story line. We would shoot all our scenes for a day or two straight, and that was extremely challenging because emotionally and physically it becomes really exhausting. Our finale was extremely challenging physically and emotionally. So, I'd say two things - our finale and those apartment scenes where Cristina and Owen lock themselves in and just go at it.

Cristina tosses a bowl of cereal on him, which isn't a reaction that Cristina is typically prone to.

Wasn't that good? Kevin had to have cereal thrown on him eight, 10 times for that one because we did a bunch of angles. There is that one shot - and we only did it once - which was his close-up, which was also my best and most direct hit. He was a great sport about that. Mark Jackson directed that episode, so we had special effects make a soft bowl because I'm not actually throwing an actual ceramic bowl at him. But that was real milk and Grape Nuts. I really liked that scene because that's her first actual moment of connection with him after he tells her the truth. Even though it's physical and it's violent, it's also a connecting moment between them where she looks at him and connects again.

Cristina rarely expresses so much emotion, which she did a lot of this season. It was a slow burn that started with the season premiere and carried throughout the season, which is different that the Grey's we've seen in the past.

You see her express her emotions with only two people: her best friend Meredith and her husband Owen. To see someone being pulled apart so intensely, which honestly most everyone goes through in their life in some ways, if you're lucky you're completely pulled apart and then you have to pull yourself together, which hopefully will be the exploration within hopefully the next season. It's not like we played this in a couple of episodes; we've played this throughout the entire year, and the reality of the resentments building and things not being dealt with building and betrayals happening is closer to real time in the way that we played it. Being on a show for this long, you don't have to do things boom-boom-boom because you have eight years of history and developing the character. So you can take your time with things and let it soak in, in a different and deeper way. I'm super-proud of this year. Having been on a show eight years, for me to have the richest storyline now, I'm extremely grateful.

Looking back on the season, is there one particular scene that you're most proud of?

It's an earlier episode with Teddy (Kim Raver), and it was a very technically difficult scene: Telling Teddy that Henry (Scott Foley) had died was a difficult scene, but there was one episode after that where Teddy needs to hear what happened in the room over and over again. All Cristina does is tell her what has happened medically, and all my dialogue was completely medical; I would just spout this out over and over again because she would just need to hear it until finally at the end of the episode, something shifts for her and she accepts what happened. I remember getting that episode and reading it in the run-through, and all my dialogue was reams and reams of medical jargon. I knew I had to start memorizing it right away and asked them not to change it since it was very challenging. You saw a crystallized version of Cristina, where she does her job and she hangs on to what she has to do and delivers the information. It's vintage Cristina. Then everything with Owen is Cristina coming apart.

What was filming the finale like? You're on location in the mountains near Big Bear for more than a week after the plane crash, which adds a physical element to an already emotional episode.

It was so hard. It was physically and emotionally challenging because you're constantly at extremely high stakes. The physicality for Cristina, she had to do a lot of things with one arm, and I had to do a lot of things with one shoe. You're running around the mountain with one shoe and one arm basically and doing things that way. And it's like we've had this cushy time on stages and in the hospital. But being out in the open on the side of a mountain was exhilarating; you cannot beat location work. I've done very little greenscreen work, but it's just a pooper. I don't care how much you blow that fan on my face, there's not a helicopter coming at me. It's really hard to manufacture the clear reality of what that is, but when you are on a mountain and you are freezing, you're freezing.

What does getting out of the hospital set do for the cast? In addition to Big Bear, you were away from the set and on the Disney lot in Burbank for the hotel scenes for the boards. Could we potentially see more new locations next season as the residents begin heading elsewhere?

It totally reinvigorates us. They had to build the hotel, the hotel rooms, and they built a bunch of other sets. It's reinvigorating for everyone, including the crew, who we've spent the last eight years on five stages. It's nice to go out; I'd love to see them in different places. We could possibly see them in other places, but again I have no idea what Shonda is going to do after this finale.

Filming the finale, in which Grey's said farewell to two castmembers -- Chyler Leigh's Lexie, who died, and Kim Raver's Teddy, who moved on -- what was that process like for you?

The finale was such a great experience, everyone really got out of their comfort zone. Those were some really painful, devastating scenes. We saw one scene cut together, and I had to get my hair and makeup redone; I could not stop weeping -- and I wasn't in that scene. It was extremely difficult because people come in and out over eight years. It's rare to have certain people be around you for eight years or five years or even three years. There's a kind of carnival aspect of to it. A lot of times for plays or films you come in for six weeks, fall in love with people, and you leave. You become family members and have really deep ties with people even if you don't spend time outside of work with them. When you have to let go of some of those things, I found it extremely difficult and extremely sad. We've been down for almost a week now, and I'm just extremely depressed and recuperating, but it's not just the physical recuperation. This has happened to me before with certain projects that I have left that I feel really low, and I know we're coming back, but certain things and dynamics will have shifted, and there's a lot of that makes me very sad.

Changing it up a bit, after so much heavy material this season, was there a scene that stands out when it was the hardest to keep a straight face?

Justin Chambers is pretty funny and always makes us laugh during scenes in April's office. There's also an episode right before Cristina actually tells Teddy about Henry where Teddy wants to dance and have a good time and she's going like, "Woo-hoo, woo-hoo," and that was pretty funny. What I really like about our show is it's really a drama with a lot of really good comedy in it, and it's mostly comedy based on character. After some heavy stuff, I'm sure that they're going to give us some funny stuff to do. And Cristina's stuff with William Daniels when he's her proctor, I thought that was hilarious. I just thought how amazing this is if we're talking about medical shows past and present. I'd be so willing to do that in 25 years, to come on as a doctor to some other kid in a medical show.

Well that was quite an interview and very informative and entertaining, but since when is Sandra Oh not entertaining and interesting to talk to. She makes a habit of not doing many interviews, however the ones she does do are definitely worth reading and/or seeing?

She didn’t really give us any clues into what to expect for Season 9, but I didn’t really expect her to as the actors probably have no idea what’s to come, unless scenes were filmed for Season 9 before they went on Hiatus. If they are filming at Big Bear in September then I think we can assume those scenes were filmed back in April before the actors went off on their holidays.

Spoiler Alert - Dark Times for Cristina and Owen on Grey's Anatomy

Owen Admits He's a Cheat

I don't normally do this, however I think this latest occurence on Grey's Anatomy warrants writing this entry and if you so desire, we can discuss it via Facebook or Twitter or via this blog. If you don't want to know then stop reading as this blog is a spoiler for an episode yet to be seen in Australia and other parts of the world. The episode in question went to air in the US on Thursday, 15 March 2012 and US viewers will not see another new episode for three weeks. Viewers were left with yet another cliffhanger.

In a previous episode Cristina and Owen attend couples counselling

The night the "Shit hit the Fan"

In the final scene Owen tells Cristina that he's not cheating on her with Nurse Emily, but he did cheat on her. The shock on Cristina's face was priceless, and the acting was totally flawless. Those who are saying give this woman (Sandra Oh) an Emmy right, freaking now are so right. The best line of the episode goes to Cristina Yang when she says to Emily. "Do you think you could stop screwing my husband." Soooo Awesome! Emily quicky denies it and I think convinces Cristina that she is not involved with Owen. So I believe Owen's confession comes as a complete shock to Cristina, given that before he confesses he tells her he love hers, but that he loves her so much it hurts. Cristina says that she's relieved, until Owen says again that it hurts him to love her. She really did not see this coming.

Cristina Walks Off

Summer Glau and Sandra Oh

So now the big question is fans; who in the heck did Owen cheat with? Does he mean that he's been with another woman, or is he telling Cristina that he is cheating on her in some other way? You know how the writers are with their clever little plot twists. So that's worth considering. Can they get past this? Will Cristina forgive him? These are questions that I really hope are answered soon as the tension in this relationship has gone on all season, and in the US there are six episodes left until the finale.

Glau on Grey's

"Could you stop screwing my husband?"

For Cristina to confront Emily she must have been pretty convinced that Owen is cheating, however I knew at the start of the episode it was not the nurse; because if a man is cheating, he will not insist that the other woman work with his wife, which is what he does. Owen insists that Emily be allowed to work alonngside Cristina to convince Owen's patient's husband to terminate care on a brain dead patient. Cristina is in a hurry to get off the case, so she can chase Teddy for a cardio surgery, but Owen is having none of it; insisting that Cristina stick with the coma patient and show some compassion. Where does Owen get off saying that? Is he implying that Cristina has no compassion? Cristina just does not show compassion in the same way as other people do.

A Happier Moment for CrisOwen

So if there is a someone that Owen has slept with, who is it? Not Teddy, that's not possible and if Shonda does that, I will scream. To have an affair going on between Teddy and Owen off screen when Teddy is supposed to hate Owen would piss off many fans. Some fans suggested April, I don't think so. But there are rumours that she will lose her cherry this season, so perhaps it's possible. Catherine Avery comes to mind, given she is such a flirt. Or perhaps no-one, perhaps Owen has realised he chose the wrong wife, and has not admitted this to Cristina.

A tense moment

Okay the other issue I want to get into is Meredith returning to Derek's service only to stuff up big time supervising Lexie and now Derek is barely speaking to Meredith and is so pissed at Lexie, that Lex spends the night at the hospital. If Shonda is trying to find a way to get Meredith back into Neuro, this did not work. It's obvious that any mistake Meredith makes will upset Derek and therefore affect their marriage. So maybe Meredith is better off where she is. Some fans have suggested Meredith may do fellowships in Neuro and General, some surgeons do specialise in multiple areas, such as Addison Montgomery, she is double-board certified or whatever. Meredith is talented enough to do whatever she chooses. She does not need to be on Derek Shepherd's service to shine, let her stand alone and shine all by herself.

Back to Neuro?

Derek and Meredith's neuro patient

Well that's my rant over and done with. I would love to hear from anyone who has an opinion on the fate of Crisowen. The latest whispers from Shondaland are that there is hope and I'm afraid that's all I can tell you.
