Sandra Oh Shares Her Feelings About Leaving Grey's Anatomy

Fans are still trying to get their head around the fact that after Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy they will not be seeing Cristina Yang running around Grey Sloan Memorial terrorizing interns or firing her snarky comments at everyone. The character of Cristina Yang is for me, one of the most well written TV characters that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. It also seems clear that Sandra Oh is having a tough time with her decision to leave. It is understandable that you would feel very emotional about leaving behind a show and character that you have portrayed for the last ten years.

Sandra Oh told the Hollywood Reporter: "Letting go of such a huge part of my life, I want to cry right now, Grey's has been the most important role of my life. Learning the rare opportunity of what it is to work on one project for 10 years — that's like being married in television years for like a thousand years."

Sandra Officially Leaves After Season 10

Sandra is not leaving immediately as her contract does not end until May, which means she will be on Grey's Anatomy as Cristina Yang for another twenty-four episode. Sandra is hoping that her character is not killed off, so the story is left open for her to return. She has expressed her desire to be a part of the Series Finale. Let's face it; Cristina Yang has been through some rough stuff during her ten years on the show and a happy ending for her seems fitting.

Sandra has said "I want this to be a celebration, I want us to get to that point where we see this character ride off into the sunset. Playing Cristina and growing her and growing myself in her, I want to usher her into the next section of her life in the best way possible. It's got to be Cristina Yang's happily-ever-after."

Sandra Hopes to Return for the Series Finale

I don't think this is the last time we will see Cristina. If she is open to guest starring for an episode here and there, I think Shonda Rhimes would jump at the chance, and an appearance now and then would boost the ratings as Sandra Oh has a huge following. Should Sandra be invited back for the Series Finale, she has stated: "There's no way that no one could keep me away from that and in the meantime, I'm just going to focus on every single day. I just can't think about [leaving] right now."

Sandra Oh also revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she will most likely keep Cristina Yangs id tags and stethoscope as a reminder of her most important acting role. She went on to say that "In 10 or 20 years, when I'm lounging around in my muumuu with a martini, I'm going to watch Grey's Anatomy from the pilot to whenever it ends, and I'm going to enjoy myself thoroughly and enjoy seeing all those moments and being able to see it with a new perspective."

So Grey's fans; what do you all think of Sandra's statement. It sounds like it was a very hard decision for her to make, but I essentially feel that she has made the right one for her career. As disappointed as I feel that my favourite Grey's character is leaving, I wish her the very best and will be keeping track of what she's up to in her career. I really hope that we see her in something great soon.

Tell me your opinion on this news, do you think Grey's will suffer with the loss of Sandra Oh? I personally think the show would suffer more if Ellen or Patrick left, however, Sandra Oh has many fans, and she and Grey's Anatomy were trending on Twitter last night.

Sandra Oh Is Leaving Grey's Anatomy

What Will Grey+Sloan Memorial Be Like Without Cristina Yang?

Well it's happened; I don't think anyone expected to hear this news so soon, but what we all feared about original cast members leaving has come to light today via the Hollywood Reporter and other online news services.

Sandra Oh will be hanging up her stethoscope at the end of Season 10. An emotional Sandra broke the news to her cast mates at the table read for the 200th episode and shortly after that she released the news to the media.

Sandra Oh has also told Shonda Rhimes that she would love to return and be a part of the series final, so it is hoped that Rhimes will not kill off the character. I for one, will be furious if she does. Shondaland Source wrote earlier today that; "Paul Lee at ABC TV did warn us, he did say that some originals had mentioned wanting to move on."  I am not surprised by this news, but I am questioning whether I can watch Grey's without Cristina Yang. Sandra Oh is by far, the most talented actress on the show and one of the reasons I watch every week, so while it will be terrible to see her leave, the actress wants to pursue other options. I have no doubt that Sandra will have her pick of job offers, given her remarkable talent. It is likely however; that she may return to theatre acting.

Chandra Wilson has also done a lot of theatre work too, and it would not surprise me to see her leave after ten seasons too, anyway I hope not. In-fact I really think the more original cast they can keep on the show, the better the show will do in the ratings. They really should bring Kate Walsh back as a recurring star or perhaps she could be a regular. And she can bring that handsome husband of hers too; Jake from Private Practice is a hottie.

Anyway back to Sandra Oh's departure. Kevin McKidd has been asked to stay on, so this obviously means they are not going to reconcile their marriage. While that is sad for the couple, it's likely the best thing from the point of view of the story. This couple were written into a corner, and neither one of them are able to give up their respective dreams. Cristina knew this at the end of Season 9, when she cut Owen loose to chase his dream and find true happiness. So it would seem that Cristina will leave Seattle on her own and hopefully this will leave the door open for her to return once in a while. She did say she wanted in on the Series Final, so who knows, Shonda might be able to get her to guest star, like she did with Kate Walsh, even after Kate left to do Shonda's other show: Private Practice.

Sandra Oh has had an interesting run playing the role of Cristina and what a fabulous role it is, the character of Cristina Yang would have to be one of the best characters ever created for a TV show. Sandra's amazing talent of being able to portray emotional scenes and pull of the comedy when needed just blows the mind. It makes a blogger and Grey's Anatomy fan wonder just who will bring the funny and snarky comments in Season 11? That will depend also on whether I watch after Season 10. In all honesty, I am not sure that I will be able to watch Grey's without Cristina. It just won't be the same.

So Grey's Addicts; what do you think about this? Are you worried that more cast members will leave? Do you think Grey's will still be great without the character of Cristina Yang? I will tell you one thing, my DVD's will be getting one Hell of a work out after Season 10 is finished.

Should Grey's Anatomy End?

Recently TV Guide magazine ran a poll on popular television shows and whether they should end. Grey's Anatomy was one of the shows polled and it the results so far show that fans of the show are split. Last I checked, 51% said Grey's should end and 49% said that Grey's should keep going.

So almost more than half the fans think Grey's Anatomy needs to end, but a majority of those who voted for the show to end probably rarely watch Grey's anymore. Most fans who still currently watch would be happy to see it keep going, as long as the stories are still good.

With the current story of the sale of Seattle Grace and the doctors using their settlement to buy the hospital; things have just gotten interesting. Who would have thought that the Harper Avery foundation would step in and bail out Seattle Grace and it leave the door open for some interesting events. Jackson Avery will be in charge. That is sure to rub a few people up the wrong way; including me. I have never seen this character in a positive light and I'm not about to start now.

In a nutshell; whether Grey's Anatomy is cancelled or not this season or next season will largely come down to ratings. It is still ranked as the most watched drama and making money for ABC is what they will be concerned with. It has already been listed as one of the shows likely to be renewed for a future season; so we are looking at ten years of Grey's Anatomy. Whether it goes beyond that will again unfortunately come down to contract negotiations.  The original six actors have only inked two year contracts, so if ABC cannot get Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the group to sign on again; then show will be history at the end of season ten. Fans will turn off if Meredith and Derek are no longer on their screens and I would be gone if Cristina were not a part of the show, Sandra Oh is a big reason why I tune in.

The hope is that the network begin those negotiations early; so that they have time to get a commitment from the actors. When the contracts were agreed on right before the end of season 8; it completely ruined the suspense of the plane crash finale, as fans knew the originals had signed before the episode went to air. Having contract negotiations dictate story arcs and creativity is not ideal either.

Grey's Anatomy has had between eight and eleven millions viewers this season and for a show that is nine years old; this is pretty outstanding. Not many show of nine years report these kind of numbers. The demographic audience is still winning in it's time-slot most weeks; so the powers that be must be doing something right. Person of Interest, which is in direct competition has reported number of up to 15 million total viewers, however in the demographic; it's numbers are very close to Grey's Anatomy and some weeks behind. While total numbers do count; it is the demographic the networks are interested in, because this dictates how much advertising revenue they will make.

Whether Season 10 will be the Series Finale is anyone's guess at the moment, however if ratings stay steady; then I don't see why ABC would not renew the series; that is if they able to negotiate contracts with their major cast members. Fans are split on whether Grey's should end, however most dies hard fans will watch if story lines are good and their favourite characters don't leave.

Patrick Dempsey Interview With Ausiello - A Grey's Anatomy Movie?

Recently Michael Ausiello from TVLine caught up with Patrick Dempsey aka Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy.

Patrick Dempsey spoke about why he chose to renew his contract and how he would like to see the Series Final play out. Part of the interview is below, and you can read the full interview at: TVLine.com

TVLINE | You re-signed for two more years last May — how come?

Patrick: "Job security. You look at what’s going on in the world and how difficult it is to get a job. Actors who have been on other [hit] shows aren’t working. I’m like, you know what? Why not [stay]? It’s here. It’s still going. Everybody’s working really well together. The scheduling is working out this year. And it’s still amazingly popular. I had a long time where I wasn’t working. I was struggling. So why not? And the money’s good. I would be stupid to say no."

TVLINE | How do you think the show will end?

Patrick: "Gosh. I hope it’s not something traumatic like another plane crash or somebody getting run over by a bus. I think [life will] sort of just go on. I think it would just go out very simply — and leave it open for the movie." [Laughs]

I think there are many fans out there that are with Patrick on this topic. The drama and tragedy has all gotten a little too much for fans of Grey's Anatomy lately. As for the comment about a Grey's movie, well that would be interesting.
